our teacher

Diane Rizzetto Diane Eshin Rizzetto, is the guiding teacher and abbess of the Bay Zen Center in Oakland, California. She received Dharma Transmission in the Zen Lineage from Charlotte Joko Beck in 1994 and is co-founder of the Ordinary Mind Zen School. Diane began her Zen training in the Soto tradition with Sojun Mel Weitsman of the Suzuki Roshi lineage in California, USA, and has been recognized by the North American Soto Zen Teacher's Association as an authorized world-wide teacher.

Diane's approach to practice is down-to-earth and practical. A mother of three and grandmother of five, she encourages her students to meet their daily life in the spirit of honest inquiry. She says that cultivating a mind of awareness is not limited to monastic practice and can be developed in the heart of our daily living-at work, in the home, in our relationships.

Diane travels to Europe several times a year to lead retreats and is available by phone to speak with people who live at a distance about their practice. Her book on the Zen precepts, "Waking Up to What You Do: A Zen Practice for Meeting Every Situation with Intelligence and Compassion" has been released by (for English) Shambhala Publications.

The book illustrates how Diane's teaching encourages people to use the Buddhist precepts to develop open, honest questioning and take clear responsibility for their actions.
